Student To Die by Hanging For Stealing Mobile Phone, Recharge Cards!



 



A Delta State High Court in Effurun has sentenced one Moses Akatugba to death by hanging for robbing a female victim of her cash, GSM handsets and recharge card vouchers. The 24-year-old secondary school student was convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.
Moses and his accomplice, who died as a result of gunshot injuries was said to have committed the crime at number 30, NNPC Housing Complex Road, Ekpan in Udu Local Government Area of the state, according to the prosecution.
The prosecution had also told the court that the convict and his late accomplice, at gun point robbed one Mrs. Akpor Mazino of N113,930.00, three GSM handsets, 54 various denomination of MTN vouchers, 28 Econnet vouchers and 25 GLO vouchers valued over N100,000.
The prosecution averred that the offence was contrary to Section 6 (b) and punishable under Section 1(2) (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap R11 Volume 14 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
In a related development, a motorcycle operator (popularly called Okada), one Paul Nwanegbo is to spend the next 15 years in jail with hard labour for robbing his female passenger of her GSM handset with a toy gun, the state High Court, Asaba has ruled. The incident was said to have taken place along Direct Labour Agency, (DLA) Road in Asaba on October 5, 2011 before the ban on operation of Okada in Asaba metropolis.
The female passenger, Amaka Okafor told the court that “on realising that the gun was a toy, I resisted him but he overpowered me after biting me with his teeth and snatched my phone from me.”
