Actor Pa Kasumu Critically ill and Hospitalized; Needs N12Million!

Popular Nollywood actor, Olukayode Odumosu popularly known as Pa Kasumu is struggling to stay alive at LUTH as he battles heart and liver diseases; “secondary prevention of repeat stroke,” after a previous stroke.

The 60-year old actor says, “I have spent so much on these diseases. When it was first diagnosed, the doctors said the ailment was severe, that they would need to control its progression for it not to affect my kidneys. This they did, and I was happy they succeeded, but now, other serious ailments have set in, necessitating this battle of survival. I am not tired yet; I still want to continue to make people laugh, but my failing health is a terrible obstacle.”

Pa Kasumu has been battling with re-occurring illness since 2009. In 2011, news went viral that he reportedly suffered from stroke, but bounced back and was at the first edition of AfricaMagic Viewers Choice Awards held in Lagos in early 2013.

He wants Nigerians, corporate organizations and the Government to help him stay alive because he can’t pay for his treatment which will cost N12m.

President Jonathan, The National Confab And The True Believers By... FEMI FANI KAYODE!

I have immense respect for Senator Femi Okunromu, Professor Nwabueze (who has since dropped out), Col. Tony Nyiam, Mr. Tony Uranta, Senator Khariat Gwadabe and many of the other members of President Goodluck Jonathan’s National Conference Advisory Committee and I have interacted closely with some of them for the better part of the last 20 years.
I can testify to the fact that those of them that I know are honest, decent, serious-minded and credible people who, though I may not agree with all the time, I have tremendous respect and deep affection for.

Yet in this matter we must be candid. The truth must be told and that truth is as follows. If any serious-minded person thinks that a ”national conference” that is not ”sovereign” and whose recommendations are subject to the will and caprices of the President and the National Assembly can make any difference in our country or bring any meaningful change then they are living in cuckoo land. Besides which nothing good can come from Jonathan and his PDP. The whole thing is an attempt to divert attention from their own shortcomings and dwindling fortunes and to divide the ranks of the opposition.

For the last 20 years some of us have been calling for a national conference but we have always insisted that the resolutions of that conference must be sovereign and binding on all, that it must comprise of representatives from every nationality in this country (no matter how big or small) and that it must have, as the first item on its agenda, whether nigeria should or must remain as one country and, if so, under what terms.

Anything short of this is fake. It is nothing more than a palliative. It is a ”made in China” copy of the original. If you take the ”sovereign” out of the ”national conference” it is like taking the ham out of a ham sandwich. All you will have left is a talk shop whose recommendations will eventually be tossed into the dustbin by both the Federal Government and the National Assembly.

The almighty Federal Government of nigeria is not about to give up it’s awesome authority and ability to control literally everything and everyone in our country by allowing devolution of power from the centre, resource control, autonomy for the regions, derivation as a principle for revenue allocation, the right of every nationality to self-determination and to secede from the federation if that is the wish of their people, the confirmation of the secularity of the state, the confirmation of the rights of all religious, sexual and ethnic minorities and all the other wholesome, progressive ideas and ideals that the true believers hold so dear.

The PDP is simply incapable of delivering all these things and no PDP President, least of all a weak and lily-livered one like Goodluck Jonathan, would ever make such concessions. The PDP is a party of deceitful old dinosaurs and conservatives. When the time for a real conference comes it will not be by government fiat but as a consequence of a series of unpleasant, unforeseeable and violent events that will compel us all to come to our senses, to come to the table and to once and for all sort out our differences or just go our separate ways. That is the bitter truth. It will never be given to us on a plate.

Those that have been seduced by Jonathan’s charm offensive in this matter will soon learn that he is simply deceiving them. At the end of the day their greatest expectations, hopes and aspirations will be dashed and frustrated and they will be made to look like utter fools. Remember the words of the Trojans- ”beware of the Greeks, especially when they bring gifts!

Jehovah help Nigeria..hmmn!....we sidon dey look!...hope this is not another Government magic?

President Jonathan’s Secret Assets ! stalls Nigeria's Qualification For Membership In A Global Anti-Corruption Body!

The refusal of President Goodluck Jonathan and other public officials to publicly declare their assets as required by law is the major reason why nigeria has not still qualified for membership of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), an influential global anti-corruption initiative backed by major nations.

Six African countries, however, have been accepted. They are Ghana, Liberia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and South Africa.
OPG was established by eight countries in 2011 to ensure governments’ commitment to promote transparency; fight corruption, use new technologies to strengthen governance, and empower citizens. Its membership has since grown to 60 states, and is viewed by many as a mark of a country’s high transparency standard.

Jack Mahoney, the partnership’s Program Associate, disclosed to Premium Times that despite demonstrating an interest, nigeria has failed to make the cut to be eligible for membership.
“Nigeria is very close to eligibility, but has not yet reached the necessary score. At last count performed in March 2013, the Nigerian Government scored an 11/16, and is therefore one point away from the 12/16 minimum score required for countries to be eligible to join,” he said.

Top on the list of the reasons given why the county is still falling short is the brazen refusal of President Jonathan and other public officials to publicly declare their assets. Last year, during a media chat, Jonathan openly stated he was not going to declare his assets:

“The issue of asset declaration is a matter of principle. I don’t give a damn about it, if you want to criticize me from heaven. The issue of public declaration I think is playing to the gallery. You don’t need to publicly declare any assets. If I am somebody who wants to hide it is what I tell you that you will even believe,” said the President.

Besides a public declaration of assets for a country to be accepted as a member, Mahoney added, it needs to publish its annual Audit Report measured by the Open Budget Index (OBI). The Index measures the state of budget transparency, participation, and oversight in countries around the world.

In 2012, Nigeria’s budget scored 16 point out of 100, what put the country at the 80th position out of the 100 countries surveyed. With 93 points, New Zealand was rated as the country with the most transparent budget followed by South Africa with 90 points.

Mahoney also said Nigeria needs to improve its score in the Democracy Index (DI) to be considered for membership. DI measures the state of democracy in 167 countries based on 60 indicators grouped in five different categories: electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; functioning of government; political participation; and political culture. Last year, DI Nigeria was ranked the 7th most terrorized country in the world.

Three Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Media Rights Agenda (MRA), BudgIT Nigeria, and Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), have called the FG to deal with the inability of the country to qualify for OGP membership.
They said Nigeria’s failure to meet OGP’s eligibility requirements “constitutes a major slur on the country’s image and reputation”, especially in the light of the fact that six other African states have become members.

The groups came up with a list of things the FG should do to make Nigeria eligible for OGP membership:

1. “Ensure that audit reports of public accounts, particularly by the Auditor-General of the Federation, are proactively disclosed and made available to members of the public.

2. Ensure that incomes of all categories of public officers are proactively disclosed as required by Section 2(3) (d) (vi) of the Freedom of Information Act and other applicable laws.

3. The Code of Conduct Bureau should bring itself into compliance with the Freedom of Information Act by acceding to requests from members of the public for it to disclose asset declarations in its custody submitted by elected and senior government officials, which constitute information maintained by it as a public institution within the meaning of the Act.

4. Improve citizen participation and civic engagement in policy-making and in all aspects of governance, including around the issue of Nigeria’s membership of the OGP.”
