Lagos bloody clash suspects arrested!

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni.

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said the state police command had arrested seven suspected cult members, who engaged in a supremacy battle in the Bariga area of the state.
The clash, which occurred on Saturday, led to the killing of a 65-year-old woman.

The deceased, Adejoke Adefuye, was burnt to death after her house on 19, Oshinfolarin Street, Bariga, was set ablaze by the rampaging cults.

It was gathered that trouble started when members of Eiye Confraternity, led by one Ibrahim Balogun, engaged another rival cult, Aiye Confraternity, led by a man identified simply as Gideon, in a supremacy fight in the area.

The two grougs were said to have vandalised some vehicles parked by the roadside in the area, while two members of the Aiye Confraternity — Abiye and Daniel — lost their lives in the clash.

A statement on Sunday quoted the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Dolapo Badmus, as confirming the arrest of the cultists, as well as the seizure of some of the weapons used during the bloody clash.

The statement read in part, “Badmus said the second in command of one of the groups was among those arrested, while three power bikes, live and expended cartridges, and a tricycle, popularly known as keke Marwa, used to get to the scene, were confiscated.

“The PPRO said the cult members have been terrorising the area for some days, adding that the police were able to make some arrests due to the quick response to distress calls received concerning the clash.

“Those arrested, according to Badmus, are Afees Fagunwa, Nurudeen Lateef, Richard Ewa, Richard Abayomi, Mohammed Musa, Kayode Dada and Adams Adelakun.”

The statement said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Gbagada General Hospital for autopsy by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, while other occupants of the burnt building who sustained minor injuries were treated by the Lagos State Ambulance Services.

Badmus was quoted as stating that further investigation into the matter had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.

We don’t recognise Biafran passport – US, UK

The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have said they do not recognise the passports being issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The National Director of Information, MASSOB, Sunny Okereafor, had said two weeks ago that the passport was valid worldwide, adding that the travel document costs N5,000 while its renewal costs N2,000.

He had said, “I assure you that the Biafran passport is valid. Except Nigeria, other countries of the world accept Biafran passport and allow our citizens to travel with it. In Europe, North and South America, Biafran passport is accepted. Nigeria is the only country that seizes Biafran passport. Go to neighbouring Ghana here, they will stamp the passport for you. Don’t be confused by the propaganda of the Nigerian government that there is nothing like Biafra passport.

“MASSOB appeals to Biafran citizens to procure their passport and use it to travel. If you doubt me, get a Nigerian passport while I have my Biafran passport; when we get to Europe, you will see who they will welcome than the other. Many people with the Nigerian passport have been repatriated, but have you heard of anybody with Biafran passport receiving such ill-treatment?”

However, our correspondent sent an email to the American consulate in Lagos to inquire from the US regarding the claim of MASSOB.

In his response, the Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the consulate, Frank Sellin, said, “The United States does not consider passports purporting to be from a Biafra entity to be a valid legal document for purposes of visa issuance.”
A similar response from the British Government was sent to The PUNCH via email.

The UK recalled that it did not support the disintegration of Nigeria during the 1967 Biafran War and had not changed its stance 49 years after.

A statement by the Press and Public Affairs Officer, British High Commission, Abuja, Mr. Joe Abuku, read in part, “The answer is unequivocally ‘no’. The UK does not recognise the so-called Biafran passport.

“The position of the UK Government during the Biafran War is a matter of historical record. The UK Government’s position, which reflected the Charter of the Organisation of African Unity, was to recognise the borders laid down at independence.

“The Biafran War caused great suffering and the UK supported the reconciliation work that followed the conflict. The UK supports the territorial integrity of Nigeria and the Nigerian Government’s commitment to work for a secure and prosperous Nigeria for all Nigerians.”

Tompolo, others...Fresh N22.7bn charges EFCC lines up 25 witnesses !

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed fresh 22 charges against an ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, and 12 others.
The charges, which were filed on Friday at a Federal High Court in Lagos, bordered on stealing, advanced fee fraud and money laundering to the tune of N22,765,900,000.
The fresh charges were filed eight days after Justice Ibrahim Buba ordered the arrest of Tompolo for his failure to appear on January 14, 2016 to take his plea on a separate 40 counts of alleged N34bn fraud earlier filed against him and nine others by the EFCC.
In the fresh charges, which had yet to be assigned to any judge, the EFCC listed 25 witnesses that will testify against Tompolo and his 12 co-suspects when the trial begins.
Among the witnesses are seven EFCC investigators, officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, officials of the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and officials of the Bureau of Public Procurement.
Also to testify against the suspects are officials of four commercial banks including Access Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc.
Those to be arraigned alongside Tompolo in the fresh 22 counts is a former Director-General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi, whose four brothers – Victor, Nobert, Emmanuel and Clement – who are still at large, were alleged to have aided the suspects to commit the fraud.
The other suspects are Kime Engozu, Josephine Otuaga, Rita Uruakpa and Pondi Kestin.
Also joined as defendants in the charges are seven companies – Mieka Dive Training Institute Ltd/GTE, Oyeinteke Global Network Ltd, Wabod Global Resources Ltd, Boloboere Properties Estate Ltd, Gokaid Marine Oil and Gas Ltd, Muhaabix Global Services Ltd and Watershed Associated Resources.
The suspects were said to have fraudulently converted various sums, running into over N22.7bn, stolen from NIMASA, to their personal use between December 12, 2014 and April 10, 2015.
They were also accused of defrauding the Federal Government by making false representations, which they knew to be untrue, in order to obtain money from the government.
The offences are said to be contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3)of the same Act.
The charge sheet, signed by Festus Keyamo, also indicated that the suspects violated various sections of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 including its sections 15(3) and 18(a) and were liable to punishment under Section 15(3) of the same Act.
The suspects were also said to be liable to punishment under Section 1 (2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap. M17, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
In count two, the EFCC alleged that the suspects “between the December 2, 2014 and April 10, 2015 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this court, with intent to defraud, induced the Federal Government of Nigeria to deliver to you, the aggregate sum of N11, 900,000,000.00 by falsely pretending to the Federal Government of Nigeria that all that land and its appurtenances lying, being and situate at the Mieka Dive Training Institute, Kurutie, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, to be acquired by NIMASA for the temporary Campus of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Warri South-West Local Government Area, is free from any encumbrances, which representation you knew to be false, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section (1) (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3)of the same Act.”
Akpobolokemi is scheduled to appear on Friday before Justice Saliu Saidu of a Federal High Court in Lagos, where he was first arraigned on December 3, 2015 alongside nine others on 30 counts of stealing and money laundering to the tune of N3.4bn.
His trial before Justice Buba, where he was arraigned along with five others on December 4, 2015 on 22 counts of alleged N2.6bn fraud, commenced last week with the EFCC calling three witnesses.
The case was adjourned till February 2, 2016.
Akpobolokemi is also scheduled to appear before Justice Buba on February 8, 2016 alongside nine others, including Tompolo, who was ordered to be arrested and produced in court on the hearing date.

EFCC: Dasuki used arms cash to buy assets in London, Dubai!

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday accused the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), of compromising the security of the nation and committing economic sabotage through his alleged diversion of over N32bn meant for the purchase of arms to fight terrorists in the North -East.

The commission, which also gave more details about the alleged diversion of funds meant for the purchase of arms by the office of the NSA during Dasuki’s tenure, said there were documents showing that the ex-NSA gave the approval for the release of the funds to the accounts of private companies and individuals for the procurement of arms.

EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), said this before Justice Yusuf Baba of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, while opposing the bail applications filed by Dasuki and his co-accused persons, who are being prosecuted on 19 counts of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and dishonest misappropriation of the money.

The other accused persons, who had pleaded not guilty to all the 19 counts on Monday, are a former Director of Finance and Administration in the Office of the NSA, Shuaibu Salisu, and a former Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Aminu Baba-Kusa, and two companies.

The two companies, in which Baba-Kusa are their directors, are Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited.
Jacobs, who said the accused persons were still under investigation for other “aspects of the case”, added that the EFCC was still tracing assets linked to the proceeds of the diversion of the funds.

The EFCC, however, alleged that Dasuki had purchased houses in London and Dubai with the proceeds of the funds meant for the purchase of arms for the soldiers battling the terror group, Boko Haram, in the North-East states.

The prosecution also alleged in its counter-affidavit that Dasuki transferred huge sums of money to companies whose identities were still being traced, adding that he transferred large sums of money outside Nigeria to acquire “several assets in Dubai and London.’’

Its counter-affidavit also read, “That our investigation also revealed that the applicant transferred large sums of monies outside Nigeria and he acquired several assets in Dubai and London with these funds.”

The defence lawyers, representing the accused persons – Ahmed Raji (SAN) for Dasuki, A. U. Mustapha for Salisu, and Solomon Umoh (SAN) for Baba-Kusa and his companies – had, while moving their respective bail applications, maintained that the charges filed before the court did not indicate that the money in question was meant for the procurement of arms.

But Jacobs, in picking holes in the lawyers’ contention, referred the judge to pages 14 to 58 of the prosecution’s proof of evidence, which he said contained documents detailing the approval of the former NSA for the release of various sums of money to individuals and private companies for the procurement of arms.
Jacobs said, “In our proof of evidence, we mentioned security money meant for purchase of arms. We also mentioned security equipment, but they decided not to look at it.

‘‘Page 14 to page 58 of our proof of evidence showed approval for the supply of security equipment, satellite and arms. All the charges we filed were based on funds approved for the purchase of arms.”
In a counter-affidavit, deposed to by an EFCC detective, Hassan Saidu, the anti-graft agency alleged that the funds were released to private companies and individuals “who have nothing to do with the supply of security equipment or rendering security services”.

According to the 19 charges preferred against the accused persons, Dasuki, Salisu and Senior Special Assistant, Domestic Affairs to the President, Waripamowei Dudafa, released N10bn to the Peoples Democratic Party for the presidential primary delegates.

It was also alleged that N2.1bn was paid into the account of DAAR Investment and Holding Company Limited, controlled by one Dr. Raymond Dokpesi for the funding of media activities for the 2015 Presidential Election Campaign for the PDP.

The sum of N1.45bn was also allegedly paid to Acacia Holdings Limited, controlled by Baba-Kusa, to organise prayers.
Again, the sum of N750m was allegedly paid to Reliance Referral Hospital Limited in favour of Baba-Kusa for prayers.

Belsha Nigeria Limited, controlled by Bello Matanwalle, was also said to have received N380m to support some members of the House of Representatives for their re-election campaign.
General Hydrocarbons Limited controlled by Thisday publisher, Nduka Obaigbena was also said to have received N670m for “energy consulting”.

The office of the NSA was also said to have paid N260m to a former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih, who was also the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, during the March 28 presidential election.

Senator Iyorchia Ayu was also said to have received N345m for the construction of shopping mall at Jabi, Abuja, purporting the said sum to be payment for satellite charges and security equipment.

EFCC said in its counter-affidavit that it was in the interest of the accused persons to remain in protective custody in order to shield them from being attacked by relatives of innocent soldiers who were drafted to fight Boko Haram without sufficient equipment.

The affidavit read in part, “That the charges being alleged against the defendant/applicant (Dasuki) border on economic sabotage that strikes at the very foundation of Nigeria well-being and existence.
“That it is in the interest of justice to put the applicant in protective custody so as to shield him from a possible attack by the relatives of the innocent soldiers, who lost their lives due to lack of adequate equipment; innocent soldiers who lost their lives due to lack of adequate facilities caused by the diversion of the funds meant for that purpose.

“Apart from the cases that are pending against the applicant, he’s also being investigated in respect of other criminal allegations.”
Jacobs said during the hearing that “investigation into other aspects is still ongoing. There is still investigation into assets tracing.”
He urged the court not to grant bail to Dasuki, whom he said “will escape from the jurisdiction of the honourable court from Nigeria”, adding that “the applicant will not be available to stand trial if released on bail.”

In moving their separate applications for bail, the defence counsel urged the court not to rely on the proof of evidence filed by the prosecution, arguing that doing so would run contrary to the presumption of innocence, which their clients were entitled to under the Constitution.

They maintained that the allegation that their clients would interfere with the prosecution witnesses was speculative.

They added that the provisions of Section 162 of the new Administration of Criminal Justice Act had placed the onus on the prosecution to prove why bail, which, according to them, is “almost automatic” for the accused persons, should not be granted to them.
Raji said, “The prosecution has made strenuous attempt to rely on the proof of evidence in urging your lordship not to grant bail.

“It is my argument that to rely on proof of evidence will violate the principle of presumption of innocence because they have not been tested.”

Raji urged the court to grant bail to Dasuki on condition of self-recognition and seizure of his passport as granted to him by Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the accused person is being prosecuted for illegal possession of firearms and money laundering.

Justice Baba has adjourned ruling on the bail application till Friday.
Meanwhile, the EFCC on Tuesday arraigned a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda; a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; his son, Sagir Attahiru; and their firm – Dalhatu Investment – on 22 counts of misappropriation of about N13bn meant for the purchase of arms by the Office of the NSA.
Also arraigned along with them, before Justice Peter Affen of the same FCT in Maitama, are Dasuki and Salisu.

The accused were said to have misappropriated the money between August 2013 and May 7, 2015.
All the accused were arraigned before Justice Peter Affen, who had, on Monday, granted leave to the EFCC to prefer the charges against the accused persons.

They pleaded not guilty to 22 counts of conspiracy, dishonest receipt of stolen property in breach of sections 97 and 317 of the Penal Code Act as well as receipt of proceeds of criminal conduct in breach of Section 17(b) of the EFCC Act.

After the arraignment on Tuesday, Justice Affen fixed Wednesday for hearing of the accused persons’ bail applications.

Kiss Daniel...I don’t care about the Headies award!

Hip hop sensation, Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe, popularly known as Kiss Daniel, has said that he does not care much about what transpired at the 2015 edition of the Headies awards and has since moved on from the show which was full of drama this time.

Daniel, one of the biggest revelations of 2015 with his massive hit, Woju, defying odds and breaking barriers, missed out on the top prize in the Next Rated category of the annual music award which was won by Supreme Marvin Dynasty artiste, Reekado Banks.

While some music lovers argued that YBNL act, Lil Kesh deserve the award the most, a sizeable majority strongly opined that Daniel with the impact of his two hits in the year – Woju and Laye, should have walked away with the honour.

Speaking with Saturday Beats earlier in the week through his manager, Louiza Williams, the lanky musician who was involved in a car accident recently, said he is working on becoming a better artiste by the day.

“The Headies is a prestigious award but I give God the thanks and glory because I would always remain on top. I don’t care about the award or what transpired at the event. I have released a statement on the issue and I don’t want to dwell much on it,” he said.
Responding to criticisms that his beats sound very similar, the singer told Saturday Beats that he responds to such comments with a smile on his face.

“I take criticism well and I thank my fans for their honesty towards me especially when I released my songs woju and laye. They said that the beats of both songs where similar so I went back to the drawing board to improve on myself and that is how we came out with the song, ‘Rabba’. Not to blow my trumpet but it was my part that made the song a hit. To be honest, Laye is my favourite song,” he said.

Barely two years down the line and the singer has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the industry. He said he misses some things about being unknown.

The singer said, “I really miss being an ordinary person because right now I cannot step out without a bouncer or security personnel because of stardom. We have different types of fans and even though most fans wish me well, things could get out of hand sometimes. Also I cannot think about taking public transport because if I do, someone could just take my picture and post it online claiming that I am broke. Now I have to avoid scandal but fame has not changed me.”

Commenting on his relationship with female fans, Kiss Daniel said he never takes advantage of a female fan.

“The ladies have been amazing to me. They are wonderful fans and I am a ladies’ man especially because of the kind of songs I sing. I love my female fans. I am a loyal and good boy who would never take advantage of women. I am a young boy with responsibilities on my neck so I am not thinking about settling down anytime soon. There is still money to be made and I am not considering marriage at all at the moment.

“This year I am working on my album and already, Wizkid has made his own version of one of my songs. I have done collaboration with him already. I also have some international shows lined up. My album is almost complete and I would release it anytime from now,” he said.

Wizkid has been stealing my songs for long –Blackface

Veteran dancehall act and a former member of the defunct Afro-pop singing trio, Plantashun Boyz, Ahmedu Augustine, widely known as Blackface, has called on fellow musician, Wizkid, to “stop stealing” his songs.

Blackface who spoke exclusively to Saturday Beats earlier in the week, said the young hip-hop artiste had been copying many of his songs for a long time but he decided to keep quiet just to let peace reign. The Benue State-born raga performer however said he decided to speak out now because he could no longer sit and watch someone else take the glory for his efforts.
The latest controversy follows the release of a new song by Blackface titled Killa where he was believed to have taken a swipe on Wizkid for allegedly copying many of his songs especially two tracks from his Dancehall Business album released in 2010.

I never really wanted to talk about it all this while but after people started checking out my new song, Killa, many felt Blackface sounded like Wizkid, which I didn’t like.
“If you check properly, you would realise that Wizkid’s hit, Ojuelegba, sounds exactly the same as the track 13 on my dancehall album released as far back as 2010. You need to listen to that album to know what I am talking about. The song is so similar that I think it shouldn’t be that way.

“Well, in Killa, I sang that “they tried to copy my melody,” and the bloggers got a hint of the gist and put their reports out. What I said is the truth and I am going to get to the root of this matter because I deserve justice.

“The Ojuelegba song has made so much revenue for Wizkid. I am not bothered about that but I want the industry to be in a position whereby people will understand that some of the artistes and the songs they are cheering is someone else’s efforts, especially fellow artistes that they are doing everything to bring down. All they are doing is to bring down Blackface and to say that he is not relevant in the industry. Some people are bent on killing my legacy. I believe there is definitely a gang-up against me in the industry and this has been going on for a long time,” he said.

Asked if he had taken on Wizkid personally on the matter, the dancehall artiste said he did his best in that regard but that the response from the Star Boy act shocked him. To get justice on this issue, Blackface disclosed to Saturday Beats that he could seek legal redress if Wizkid or others do not refrain from stealing his intellectual properties.

“There was a time Wizkid followed me on twitter and I told him that I don’t want him taking my songs and that if he wants to do any of my rhythm, he should let me know. I told him that because I was just being a big brother to him. I told him that our songs can’t be sounding so similar and that if he wants anything, he should let me know. But after some time, he ‘unfollowed’ me and it was shortly after then that the Ojuelegba song was released. I don’t have any problem with Wizkid or any other person, all I am saying is that they shouldn’t be tampering with my songs because those are my properties.

“Wizkid and I do different kinds of music and he doesn’t have my type of skill. I don’t have a problem with that. I am only bothered when somebody takes my song and tries to turn it around into theirs without giving me due credit,” he said.

Efforts to reach Wizkid to react to Blackface’s claims proved abortive as his phone numbers were switched off. His manager, Sunday Are, couldn’t be reached as his line was switched off as well.

Wizkid has been in the news lately for a similar allegation. Hypertek Music artiste, Dammy Krane, also recently accused him of stealing one of his songs. The controversy degenerated into a physical fracas with Wizkid reported to have thrown a glass cup at Krane which injured him during a night out at a club in Lagos. The two are believed to have since mended fence.
